Ruddy Duck

Oxyura jamaicensis

The ruddy duck is in the family of stiff-tailed ducks; its rigid tail feathers serve as a rudder. As well, the ruddy duck tends to cock up its tail. The male exhibits a deep cinnamon-coloured body when breeding, reverting to a buff breast and dark-brown back in winter. In addition, the male's bill turns blue during mating season.
