Dall's Porpoise

Phocoena dalli

It is a not-infrequent sight among the outer islands of British Columbia to see a Dall's porpoise swimming before the bow of a boat, surfing in the wake and coasting on the bow wave. This small, swift species can reach up to about twenty knots, and migrates from Canadian waters in the summer to southern California in the winter. Its foods include hake, capelin, herring, and squid, and Dall's porpoise is likely preyed upon by orcas.
