Canada's Species   Species at risk

Longjaw Cisco

Coregonus alpenae

Once found in lakes Huron and Michigan, the longjaw cisco was exploited to extinction by 1975. Environmental changes as well as predation by sea lamprey were also limiting the population size. The cisco was protected in Canada, but the regulations were not strictly enforced.
